Using Twitter and Hashtags to Tap In to the Information Stream

Noah Keesecker, program manager for Springboard for the Arts, talks about common hashtag mistakes that he sees on Twitter. Often people want to tweet about a certain topic but decide to create a new, different hashtag. However, when you use a unique hashtag, you are missing out on the opportunity to tap into the informational stream of people already tweeting about that topic and, in fact, may miss out on a larger audience for your tweet.

Noah's Tips for Tweeting and Hashtags:

  • Don't be afraid to use a hashtag people are already using
  • Refrain from creating new hashtags, as that will set you outside the group of people already tweeting on your specific topic
  • By using a common hashtag, you can actually garner more readership!
